A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of palm oil - differentiated by RSPO-certified and
non-certified, regionally, spatially, and by estate and smallholder

This draft paper provides updated data on the impacts of the diverse production practices of the palm oil market.
A comprehensive comparison of cradle to-gate life cycle environmental performances of RSPO certified and non-certified palm oil is provided, building
upon a previous study conducted in 2016-2019 (Schmidt and De Rosa, 2020).

The slides include a small LCA crash course and a presentation of current draft results from the crowdfunded project on RSPO certified vs non-certified palm oil.

The following updates have been made since the last draft results:

• PKO results are included for ALCA (not CLCA since in consequential modelling, there is no difference between the RBD PKO and the RBD PO)
• The impact assessment method Stepwise2006 has been revised to align with the new IPPC guidelines. In the previous results, we utilized the original stepwise2006 with AR5 (IPCC2013), while the current results are calculated using IPCC 2021.
• The Fertilizer shares (shares of specific fertilizer types) have been updated to 2021 data from FAOSTAT. Previously, only 2020 data was available and used.

This document contains the Consequential DRAFT results (LCI and LCIA) from the current RSPO study.

This short manual describes how to download the SimaPro databases for reproducing the Attributional and Consequential LCA results found in ‘Schmidt and De Rosa (2019) Comparative LCA of RSPO-certified and non-certified palm oil’.

This file provides LCI and LCIA datasets for CPO, CPKO, RBD palm oil and RBD palm kernel oil. The file contains the following sheets:

• Sheet LCI summary tables (report): an excel version of the linked LCI data for RSPO-certified and non-certified (the data presented in the LCI summary tables in the report);
• Sheet CPO&CPKO (LCI result): the full LCI results for CPO and CPKO for both attributional and consequential model;
• Sheet RBD PO&PKO (LCI result): the full LCI results for RBD PO and RBD PKO for both attributional and consequential model;
• Sheet CLCA LCIA dashboard: the consequential LCIA results calculated using the LCIA methods Stepwise (default), ILCD and CML;
• Sheet ALCA LCIA dashboard: the attributional LCIA results calculated using the LCIA methods Stepwise (default), ILCD and CML.
