Life cycle assessment for metals, from mining to recycling

Metals are used throughout the global economy. Demand is expected to grow with the energy transition, particularly for renewable energy systems, electric vehicles and energy storage technologies.

Metal extraction and processing are associated with significant environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion and pollution. Reducing these impacts while meeting growing demand requires an understanding of how metals are produced, used and recycled.

At 2-0 LCA, we provide life cycle assessments for the metals sector, from mining to recycling. We help you assess the environmental consequences of your decisions and identify opportunities for improvement.

Assess your material and production choices

Choosing a material or changing a production process can affect environmental impacts across the supply chain. Life cycle assessment helps you compare alternatives and understand the trade-offs before you decide.

We support companies that produce, process or use metals. An assessment can focus on extraction and production, or extend to the use and end-of-life stages of a product. The scope depends on the decision you need to make.

LCI data for metal supply chains

Several metals are often extracted from the same ore. A change in demand for one metal can therefore affect the supply of others. These relationships matter when assessing the consequences of material choices.

We develop life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets that examine how production is likely to respond to changes in demand. Our work combines production data with market analysis to identify the relevant suppliers and account for metals produced together.

We also review existing datasets and develop alternatives where the available data does not adequately represent the production systems or market responses relevant to your assessment. Our experience includes base and precious metals, as well as metal-containing raw materials used in industrial catalysts.

We deliver

  • Life cycle assessments of metals and metal-containing materials.
  • Development and review of LCI datasets.
  • Prospective assessments of planned production facilities and alternative production scenarios.
  • Independent critical review of LCA studies and LCI data.

Frequently asked questions about raw metal LCA

Companies often face similar challenges when measuring the footprint of their raw metals. Here are the most common questions we receive regarding our assessment services.

Life cycle assessment helps you compare the environmental impacts of different material and production choices. It can identify where impacts occur across the supply chain and assess how they may change if you select a different metal or production process. This helps you understand the trade-offs and identify opportunities for environmental improvement.

Producing one metal often also yields other metals, known as co-products. Their relationship matters when assessing the environmental consequences of changing demand.

We examine which metals drive production and how the additional outputs affect other production or consumption. Where a co-product replaces production elsewhere, we account for that substitution. Where several metals jointly drive production, the model needs to reflect their combined influence.

We use existing life cycle inventory (LCI) datasets, including ecoinvent, together with relevant production information, scientific literature and market data. We review these sources and adapt or develop datasets where necessary.

Our work includes modelling mining and refining processes and identifying the suppliers likely to respond to changes in demand. The data and level of detail depend on the purpose and scope of your assessment.
