Functional unit

A functional unit is the quantified performance of a Product system for use as a reference unit. This fundamental concept, defined in ISO 14040, serves as the basis for all comparisons in Life Cycle Assessment.

The functional unit provides the essential reference to which all inputs and outputs in an LCA study are related. It defines what is being studied in terms of the function or service provided, rather than simply the physical product itself. This function-based approach ensures that comparisons between different products or systems are fair and meaningful, as they are evaluated on the basis of equivalent performance rather than equivalent mass or volume.

For example, when comparing different lighting technologies, the functional unit might be defined as "provision of 1,000 lumens of illumination for 10,000 hours" rather than "one light bulb". This ensures that an LED bulb, a compact fluorescent lamp, and an incandescent bulb are compared on an equivalent functional basis, accounting for their different lifespans and energy efficiencies. Similarly, when comparing packaging materials, the functional unit might specify "protection and distribution of 1 litre of beverage" rather than "one container", thereby accounting for differences in durability, barrier properties, and transport efficiency.

The functional unit must be clearly defined, measurable, and relevant to the goal of the study. It typically includes quantitative specifications of performance characteristics such as magnitude (how much), duration (for how long), and quality (to what standard). A well-defined functional unit is essential for ensuring the validity and reproducibility of LCA results, as it determines the scope of the product system under study and enables consistent comparison of alternative ways to deliver the same function.

ISO 14040 emphasises that the functional unit should reflect the purpose of the study and be relevant to the decision context, ensuring that the assessment captures the true functional equivalence required for meaningful comparison.
